I went to gradeschool in the PNW, and they give everybody in my district a rough outdoor survival crash course in fifth grade. The rule for foraging berries is: nothing black will kill you, reds are hit or miss so try to identify before tasting unless you’re already starving to death, and whites are too risky/grisly to attempt.
Outside the region, or if you’re sampling someone’s landscaping, different rules apply — but if you keep to the local wilds they work great.
