I’m in my mid-sixties and invited a friend from Germany who is just four years younger to join me for a morning hike. Glancing at a local trail map, I suggested a route that looked to be eight miles roundtrip. It turned out to be more than 14 rocky miles roundtrip, and I already had a mile under my belt from walking my dog. I was pretty worn out by the time we finished and would have been in trouble had my friend not bought me an ice cream sandwich at the halfway point. She was unfazed by the hike.
