I've been thinking about cosmology. We make assumptions about homogeneity and isotropy of the universe. In what sense are these hypotheses falsifiable? We know that there are dense superclusters of galaxies with large voids between them. The microwave background seems to be quite isotropic, but not 100%. Is there a universally accepted threshold above which we'd proclaim the universe anisotropic or inhomogeneous? Who decides that?
