So it's not likely to be earth which is good news on regards to you not having to go out there with a shovel looking for wet spots (you won't find any so quickly anyways)
Some of the options are, since you are connected to a municipal aqueduct, some yahoo decided to play with dials and changed the city's water pressure and it started dislodging stuff from main pipes. You mentioned this is quite rural, so there's a chance there's an old deteriorating unlined iron pipe (unlikely, but possible since the USA is basically the third world). Potentially some iron and/or manganese is being dislodged and sent your way, but you mentioned slime so there a chance there an iron ochre surprise somewhere either in your pipes or the municipality's pipes.
