I attended my first staff meeting at the practice where I’ll be interning, and I’m proud to be learning there. The workplace culture felt strong, and the commitment to continuing education and resources was impressive. However, I was surprised and disturbed by the lack of understanding around how traumatic events impact individuals across their lifespan.
One full-time therapist whimsically acknowledged that she didn’t know how to connect a client’s trauma at age 5 to their current presenting symptoms, which was shocking to me given her level of training. The whole room nodded and agreed.
While it highlights an opportunity to bring value to the practice, it also serves as a cautionary tale how much work still needs to be done in the field of psychotherapy.
CBT can’t be the only way we address our client’s needs. Psychodynamic, attachment based root cause work is needed to create sustainable change and _hope_ in the lives of complex human beings.
