There is sometimes an awfully large gap between making shareholders money and creating goods and services. This piece by Corey Doctorow on Red Lobster's demise is a great example:

The real world is much more complicated (and much worse) than the economic models would lead you to believe. Economics has a bad habit of oversimplifying then relying too heavily on the results of those models, leading to misguided policy recommendations.
