I have tried both “Mr. Tuffy” style and thinner polyurethane tire liners. The thicker Mr. Tuffy liners appeared to work, but the rolling felt very harsh. The thin polyurethane liners probably prevented some flats but also caused a flat due to rubbing between the liner and the inner tube. Interestingly, I read this is not too uncommon with tire inserts.

There’s so much glass in the bike lanes here in Oakland, I was going kind of crazy. I considered Tannus, but based on #BikeNite and colleague recommendations, I purchased the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, since they were much more expensive than the inserts. When I put it on, I noticed it was about double the weight of my previous tire, and it had what felt like 10mm of rubber in the center (it’s probably less but it’s very thick!). The tire has really worked well so far.
