#8 Boys Life – Boys Life
In 1996, in Little Five Points, Atlanta Georgia, I asked a clerk to pull a CD case from a massive display of indie music. That CD was Boys Life. #indieRock #mathRock #nerdRock It didn’t look like much but when I listened to it four times on my multi-hour car ride back to base I perceived an emotional tone in the music and vocals I’d never before heard. I listened to this album again a few months ago and still hear an angst and almost panicked despair in the vocals that match with the guitar shredding and sudden bursts of sound as well as sudden silence that keep the listener off balance. This style was popular in the indie scene of the 90’s with bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Rodan, Christie Front Drive, and Slint, but for some reason I always felt like Boys Life was, for me, the tightest knit.
