Ruskin's view was while this was a demand side factor, the supply side facilitated a lack of empathy... in other words while he didn't call it that, there was a dialectical relations between what the system as configured 'encouraged' and the ability to downplay (or ignore) empathetic considerations.... I found his approach really rather interesting as in some ways it predated so much on how sociality (& civility) impacts (or is engineered to fail to) economic relations
