One of the hidden treasures is believed to be from the Meiji era. It’s a framed piece from a pharmaceutical manufacturer, gifted to Matsumoto Ryōjun, the first Surgeon General of the Imperial Japanese Army. After some research, I found out he was the person who, before Mori Ōgai, strongly opposed introducing barley rice into military meals despite its effectiveness against beriberi. His reasoning? 'It’s not part of (German) academic theory.' Sounds a lot like Japan nowadays...
