There’s a great book by Byron Tau that details how social media became the main tool used by three letter agencies. I’m also in the UK so share your experience if non stop surveillance. I hate it and try steps to minimise it. I don’t use big tech companies, except when I really don’t have a choice for work reasons.
I agree with everything you say but disagree that there wasn’t anti-migrant sentiment. The ‘small boats’ meme has been a constant factor in at least the last 3 years. The misnaming of the murderer was propagated from a news source in Austin Texas. The State is not the only battle we are facing. The surveillance is in collusion with big tech interests. We need to maintain a critical eye on this. Reducing everything to ‘the guberment’ misses the whole story.
People even opt in for surveillance with their doorbells and Amazon boxes! As if phones weren’t bad enough…
