The Hirschfeld Institute in Berlin opened in 1919. It was dedicated sexual orientation and of transgender identities, as well as supporting LGBT+ people. As part of his work, Magnus Hirschfeld helped ensure that trans people were able to change their names and have an ID card. The institute and its contents were destroyed by the Nazis in 1933.
