Well, there are all kinds of reasons some people and especially government might want people to believe they have magic tech they really don't. If we had interstellar tech it would be such a huge boon economically and make so many trillionaires that I don't believe for a second it is there and being kept unused in any gainful way. Nor do I believe that all the physicists and engineers that would have to know the science and technology could all be successfully kept from spilling the beans.
