I've heard some story rules, but following rules of fiction writing doesn't really suit my personality, I'm way too intuitive. I did double check certain things with my husband who is amazing at seeing what's underneath and how things really work, to make sure my main character in my first book was actually growing throughout the book. She was.
For my 2nd novel, I wrote it once, replaced the main character and had to do what you mention of filling in plot holes and making sure all the lose threads were tied down by the end. I think it worked pretty well.
I get scenes and then I follow the characters and see what they end up doing in between scenes, sometimes leading to a whole new thread that I end up following and keeping track of.
Writing novels is a lot of writing, rewriting, keeping track of a ton of things, and hoping that you didn't miss any major things by the end of it. Or at least that's how I feel about it.
It's truly a joy to be an author though, and learning new ways of writing, story creation, formatting, copy writing, and even cover design. I am living my dream. 😊
