obviously I constantly talk shit about cops, but I do genuinely think the MTA cops who stopped traffic immediately on hearing the ship out of control call is a pretty heroic move.

Yeah, it's their job, but stopping traffic over a busy bridge on something that is probably nothing is a very costly behavior. And we know that policing in general does not encourage precautionary costly behavior that might prevent low risk, high cost events.
