See my reply here. Nvram exists but we have no interest in messing with it for Linux. Its purpose is to store machine-global data and Apple is the only entity that defines how it is used. We long ago considered and discarded the idea of using it for e.g. our own EFI variable storage. Too big a can of worms.
This is one of those things where I put on my project lead and person-with-a-reputation-for-not-bricking-machines hat on and say we are absolutely not going in this direction.
