Here in the EU GDPR law possibly requires data processing to be done in the EU, hence Meta showing up in the game. I belive there is an increasing need for the decentralised principle to be applied to all other digitised information though that's a bigger discussion than this thread. The issue like you say is finance, and portability of identity and own content.
