This is a real issue. Real estate is so expensive here (Vancouver) that the only profitable alternative for new rental housing are $million+ condominiums. Population is growing; age of new apartment blocks is economically unviable, and what rentals remain are sought after by increasing numbers of people.
Add to that empty (vacant) apartments/condos - offshore wealth shelters and private equity - and short-term rentals, and the situation is dire (availability; affordability)
