I mentioned late last night that the flame-out of sites like Twitter and Reddit is like a levee breaking.

There are numerous forces, governments in particular, who are hostile to an open internet - and by open internet I mean a system where we, the users, can say whatever we want. What they're more comfortable with is a system like the cable company, where there are few who create the content and we, the many, can only consume - but I digress...

While we enjoy hating and villainizing the platforms - and they've earned it - they have had the money and resources to stave off the attacks. But, sooner or later each platform will fall to weird leadership, bad planning and bankruptcy, or to one of the incessant lawsuits. When they do, there's no one standing between the fascist governments and us.

I'm not trying to make heroes out of the bad guys, but let's not get too comfy in our schadenfreude. The enemy of my enemy might not be my friend, but when the titans are done fighting, we're what's in their path.

The fight hasn't started friends, and we're already on our heels.
