You're in a shop as a guest of the owner, who can appoint any person to be their representative re security matters and clearly the staffer who asked to search your bag had been appointed to do that.
In SA you can't legally be searched ( invasion of privacy) but you can be required to open bags for inspection.
I just don't use the damned things.
