The Hala Al Khayyat (Abu Dhabi) has welcomed the 'Pearl Festival' in its first edition in the Al Dhafra region, attracting 1,900 visitors since its launch on Friday, including workshops and community activities that aim to bridge the gap between the past and present, highlighting the heritage of pearls, transferring knowledge to future generations, and promoting awareness about the importance of marine environment and its conservation. The festival, which will continue until tomorrow, is held at the Pearl Abu Dhabi Center in the port city, providing an opportunity to learn about the story of the Pearl Abu Dhabi Center, established in 2007, to become a pioneering center in the region for sustainable pearl farming, aiming to preserve and revive the heritage related to diving and pearl diving traditions. The festival offers a variety of experiences, including educational, recreational, and cultural activities, and workshops in an interactive environment, encouraging learning and awareness about the marine traditions related to pearls, deeply rooted in Abu Dhabi's history, to strengthen national identity among different generations through the celebration of this authentic heritage. According to Aisha Al Hamadi, Head of the Pearl Abu Dhabi Unit at the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, the festival supports the emirate's vision to promote eco-tourism and raises awareness about the center's role in the port city. Al Hamadi explained during a press tour of the festival's platforms that the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi aims to be the first of its kind in the region for sustainable pearl farming through adopting the latest technologies and innovations, while highlighting the UAE's traditions and heritage, focusing on four main tracks: education and awareness, marketing, research and studies, and eco-tourism. The Pearl Abu Dhabi Center produces around 100,000 farmed oysters annually and extracts 20,000 pearls annually, offering unique opportunities for growth as a pioneering project for Abu Dhabi, linking culture, education, and sustainable tourism, and benefiting from the UAE's creative talents. The festival discusses through dialogue sessions, with participants from the UAE and Gulf countries, experts and knowledge holders on diving, pearls, and the environment, the cultural heritage of the Gulf region. Through the festival's diverse platforms, the importance of preserving the heritage related to pearls and diving is emphasized, as well as the presentation of the diving stages in the past and the traditions related to them, the development of this profession over time, and the spotlight on types of pearls and their names in the Gulf, in addition to discussing ways to raise awareness among youth about this rich heritage. The festival ensures the launch of joint projects with educational institutions and the introduction of artistic elements to prepare jewelry designs using farmed pearls, contributing to the revival of diving heritage through modern and sustainable practices. The 'Pearl Abu Dhabi' focuses on promoting eco-tourism in the emirate by highlighting the state's traditions and heritage, conducting scientific and practical experiences to enhance knowledge in the field of marine life farming for oysters, leading to increased production and improved pearl quality, as well as raising awareness among young generations about sustainable oyster farming, through organizing visits to school and university students and participating in local and international events.
