#EngenderedWriting 64 — Is there such a thing as toxic femininity? Would this be taking a feminine gender role too seriously? How would you portray this, or how have you portrayed this?
Short answer: toxic femininity is a direct result of patriarchy; it’s how women gain (or at least seek) power in a patriarchal system, which therefore makes it the direct counterpart of toxic masculinity (long answer: all of The Patriarchs by Angela Saini).
Have I portrayed it? I’ve certainly portrayed women trying to fulfil their gender role to please others. I tend to give women more power than they would have in real life in my books, which makes it less likely they need to seek power in that toxic way even if they’re the antagonist.
