Today’s quote from #Russia Dmitry Medvedev that is probably the most brutally honest outlining of Russia’s imperial policy towards Central and Eastern Europe:
The existence of Ukraine is deadly for Ukrainians. And I do not mean only the current state, the Bandera political regime. I am talking about any, absolutely any Ukraine.
This first paragraph already cancels all the previous bullshit narratives of “denazification” pushed by #Putin - Medvedev clearly states Russia is not going to calm down with mere change of government in #Ukraine to a more friendly towards Russia. It also cancels all the nonsense Putin was saying about “security guarantees” for Russia - the problem is not in Russia feeling “unsafe”, the problem is in Russia simply denying Ukraine’s right to existence. Medvedev isn’t very diplomatic about it:
Why? The presence of an independent state on historical Russian territories will now be a constant reason to resume hostilities. It’s too late. Whoever is at the helm of the cancerous new entity called Ukraine, it will not add legitimacy to its rule and legal standing to the “country” itself.
And, please note, in the following paragraph he doesn’t even pretend it’s Russia who is “feeling threatened” by a renewed conflict. Quite the opposite, he’s clear that it’s Russia who is going to create the threat, simply because its current political elites deny Ukraine’s right to exist:
And, therefore, the likelihood of a new fight will remain indefinitely. Practically always. Moreover, there is a 100 percent probability of a new conflict, no matter what security papers the West signs with the puppet Kiev regime. Neither Ukraine’s association with the EU nor even this artificial country’s accession to NATO will prevent it. It may happen in ten or fifty years.
Above Mededev is trying to create a sense of inevitability - Russia will get Ukraine no matter what. Of course, this is rather miserable sabre rattling as Poland’s, Latvia’s, Lithuania’s and Estonia’s recent history clearly demonstrates that membership in #NATO is a very powerful deterrent for Russia. And membership in EU, with the associated modernization and economic growth, is yet another deterrent by means of building up country’s own powerful defence. Russia has over the last years demonstrated that in the social fabric of the world it plays the same role predators play in natural biosphere - it spots weak organisms, plays on their weaknesses and feeds on them. The 2022 has verified many popular stereotypes, but one of the most important ones was that of Ukraine and the West being “weak” and “decaying”. Ukraine is still standing and objectively in better position than in 2022, while the predator is increasingly struggling as it only has a few tricks in its toolbox.
Having set the scenes in the spirit of inevitability, Medvedev then moves on to a false “realism”, trying to convince Ukrainians their fate is already decided and they just have to surrender.
This is why Ukraine’s existence is fatal for Ukrainians. They are practical people after all. No matter how much they wish death on the Russians right now. No matter how they hate the Russian leadership. No matter how much they aspire to the mythical EU and NATO. Choosing between eternal war and inevitable death and life, the absolute majority of Ukrainians (well, except for a minimal number of thuggish nationalists) will ultimately choose life. They will realize that life in a big common state, which they do not love much now, is better than death. Their death and the death of their loved ones. And the sooner Ukrainians realize this - the better.
