Comte de Sats Germain on Nostr: The would-be hero stands at a door. Everything he has ever wanted is on the other ...

The would-be hero stands at a door. Everything he has ever wanted is on the other side of that door. Recognition, wealth, prestige, respect... Every object that drives him in his quest. Its right there.

But there's a guard. The door stands open - the hero can walk through, if only the guard would let him. The guard warms him : even if he gets past him, there's twenty more doors with twenty more guards, and each is stronger than the previous. The hero wants to fight monster, not guards. This guy is only doing his job...

He bargains with the guard. He gives him his clothes. He gives him his sword. He begs. He flatters. Nothing works.

Years pass, and the once-hero is old and still waiting at the door. Everything he wants is waiting for him, on the other side. But he's the good guy, not the bad guy. His eyes are failing. His strength is long gone.

Suddenly he asks, "in all these years, why hasn't anyone else ever come to this door?"

"This door is for you alone," the guardsman responds. And he begins to close the door.
