Day of the Dead in Mexico, Dia De Los Muertos, is rooted deep in the ancient religions and beliefs of the Native Pan- and South Americans, including Mayan and Aztec beliefs. Ultimately these were modified by the forced Chistianity of the European invaders. There was always been a god of the afterlife in human history. In ancient Greece, his name was Hades. People do not die; they live on in the Afterlife, which may be an alternate name for the collective consciousness.
In modern Mexico, deceased Ancestors return to the living world for one day a year. It is the living's responsibility and privilege to honor and commune with them. That takes the form of creating an offrenda with gifts such as mezcal or tequila, fruit, candy sugar skulls, and a special bread. Most importantly, they tend to the grave and decorate it for their relatives' return. In some cemeteries, they hold an all-night vigil, complete with mariachi bands to welcome their loved ones.
