I used to like to have at least 3 customers 'on the go' - typically one in 'prototype or PoC' stage - one in full on development and one (or more) in active support.

The Dev one was usually >50% of our hours for a couple of months.

We tried to keep a couple of month's money in the bank, always billed against short milestones (Max 1 month of work) and never allowed anyone to take more than 30 days to pay.

But we were a 3+ person team possibly different for solo...
