At least 15 people have been killed in Papua New Guinea after mass riots broke out yesterday over pay cuts in the public sector. The government claimed that the pay cut was a “glitch” and would be reversed in the next month’s paycheck, but it was not enough to calm the fears of those protesting who proceeded to loot stores and burn a vehicle in front of the Prime Minister’s residence.
Police officers led a strike after noticing a pay cut in their latest wage packet. Shortly after, protests broke out across the country that ended in riots and looting, with images showing people taking essential goods such as food and household appliances.
Prime Minister James Marple then deployed the military to restore order until police returned to work. The government is a close ally of Australia and the US, with which it has numerous “security agreements” as the southwestern Pacific country is seen as a buffer between Australia, China, and the rest of the Asia-Pacific.
The country has suffered months of rising inflation and unemployment. UN figures say that 40% of the population lives below the “extreme poverty” line with a minimum wage of around $150 per month.
The dead are split between the capital, Port Moresby, and the city of Lae, although it’s not confirmed yet if those dead are a result of the chaos during the rioting or from the military repression.
