Men who dress well are referred to as "smart" dressers & women become feminine bimbos, "feminine" having become a synonym for mindless weakness. A theme I often touch upon is that femininity & inner strength don't have to be mutually exclusive. As you note, the Calpurnians have, essentially, based strength on appearance.
