I think you have the cause and effect backwards. The 1% have been afraid of effective, popular democracy since 1968 when it became obvious that people were waking up and getting organized as never before. Almost everything that's happened politically and economically since then can be explained as they chose to kill or jail as many of us as they could to take back control before they lost it for good. They knew they were causing climate change. Fascism is their end game.
