Now this sounds obviously false, but hear me out: the light may have been emitted while the object was still outside the horizon, but only reach your eyes after it has crossed the horizon.
Let's make things a little more concrete. Say you're Bob, and you're following Alice, who has jumped straight into the black hole, from a constant distance that's small compared to the size of the black hole.
To talk about "before", "while" and "after", we need a reference time. Let's take the time of your local coordinate system in which both you and Alice are stationary.
At time tA when Alice crosses the horizon, the light that reaches your eyes has been emitted at t<tA, it's just a normal image of someone who hasn't been through an event horizon.
Between tA and tB when you cross the horizon, you keep seeing Alice's pre-tA light. Everything is still normal.
Then as the exact moment you cross the horizon at tB, you see the image of Alice as she was at tA — in fact, as I've pointed out in a previous toot, at that moment, all images you see looking right in front of you are images of objects crossing the horizon. The apparent horizon is a half-line instead of just a crossing point. Since the apparent horizon has gained a dimension, Alice's image doesn't need to be flattened, it is all intersecting the apparent horizon, from head to feet.
