Concerns have been raised about the impartiality of taxpayer-funded Rape Crisis Scotland (RCS) after it hired a former SNP MP to a role in the charity. The Scottish Government has insisted that it has nothing to do with staffing at the scandal-hit organisation which is mostly funded through grants from the public purse.
But "alarm bells" are sounding after Alison Thewliss was handed a job with the charity, especially because she was pictured in front of a sign which said "decapitate Terfs" while she attended a trans rally in Glasgow in 2023. RCS has been embroiled in a trans row in recent months which sparked resignation calls for Chief Executive Sandy Brindley.
SNP MSPs were slated on Tuesday for attempting to hush up the fact Ms Thewliss had been appointed by Rape Crisis Scotland, trying to cut a committee feed where Scottish Tory Equalities spokeswoman Tess White tried to ask Equality Minister Kaukab Stewart about this.
But now the charity has been forced to admit that it had hired the former Glasgow MP, who broke down in tears when she was voted out by Scots last year. It is another taxpayer-funded role for Ms Thewliss who was previously a councillor and worked as an SNP researcher, meaning she's not had a job outwith politics.
