Not sure when you came to the project. But nostr is just over half a decade old. I was the first DAU and 2nd contributor, and the first 3 years were a real struggle. In fact the first year it was abandoned, because people thought they needed to run a relay, and then there were only about 5 relays.
After 3 years Jack noticed it and helped out. Then things really exploded. It was FULL of grass roots authentic devs excited to explore the edge of what was possible. 5-10 projects would spring up every day. Everyone was excited.
The grants were a mixed blessing. While some devs did very well. The more quiet ones who did not make a name for themselves got nothing. And then the whole dev process moved towards getting grants. Alot of good devs got grants, but some who were just good at presenting, or gaming the system jumped on it too.
Most of the grass roots got nothing, and the relay network got nothing and even were mocked. Now dev has stabilized around qiote a few grantees, but much less from the grass roots. It could be managed a lot better. I guess we all know trickle-down funding is quite problematic. But maybe it's an opportunity to find better models, as there's still lots of funding to go round.
