“The Story of Pearl Girl” is also fabulous in its portrayal of the triangle relationship between Su Muzhe, Yan Zijing and Zhang Jinran. It could easily have descended into shallow mellow drama, but it turns out that they all respect each other.
Zhang Jinran deserves respect, because he sees that he is not the person loved by Su Muzhe. He still has flare ups of jealousy but quickly realizes that he likes having Yan Zijing as a friend and fellow combatant. Not many people love by ceding ground.
