Turning fantasy into a genre about cheap wish-fulfillment has been a catastrophe. Fantasy has traditionally had rules and limitations in order to explore different aspects of reality and impart moral lessons. Magical actions have consequences and moral implications because real-life actions have consequences and moral implications. Fantasy worlds are supposed to be kind of parallel worlds, having their own rules, but still mirroring our own in important ways. If you totally detach them from reality just because it looks cool, that just ruins the significance and weight of the world.
