I have previously measured the actual energy consumption of our BYD Seal Premium during highway driving, and come up with numbers equivalent to a nominal max range (using 100% of the battery) of 470-490 km. That's an average energy consumption of 16.8-17.6 kWh / 100 km.

I've now done the same calculation for our typical driving, i.e. short trips through suburban Sydney, mostly during peak hours, with very heavy traffic and lots of stop and go. The much lower average speeds are good for efficiency but the stop/go traffic is bad for efficiency, even in an electric car with regenerative braking and minimal energy consumption while stationary. It looks like those two effects roughly cancel each other out, but it depends a *lot* on the weather.

I've just put the car on to charge now after a spell of unseasonably warm weather. It did 324.3 km using 70% of the battery, equivalent to a max range of 463 km and an average energy consumption of 17.8 kWh / 100 km. The previous battery cycle was the exact same sort of driving but during significantly colder weather, and it only managed 301.5 km using 80% of the battery, equivalent to a max range of just 377 km and an average energy consumption of 21.9 kWh / 100 km. During that cold spell we were using the aircon to pre-warm the car most mornings, and using the aircon and window demisters at lot while driving, and clearly that can make a big difference!

I should note that I wasn't making any deliberate efforts to drive efficiently during this suburban driving. I had the car in Sports mode the whole time, and did take advantage of it when the traffic allowed. It would certainly be possible to get better efficiency than I did.
