In a similar vein, in his book "The Diamond Age", due to the proliferation of Star Trek-esque replicators amongst everyone, the net result is only hand-made products made from "real" materials are considered valuable.
... I can foresee a future where 3D printers basically bring about a similar situation. It's already kinda here. e.g. Ikea shelf vs. a hand made wooden shelf, etc.
