Lots of children will try holding a pencil in a fist at some point, and for the vast majority that will cause problems down the line.
*But*! Yeah, teachers need to spot when it's happening for some underlying reason - left handedness, dyspraxia, musculoskeletal problems, even just a *really* ingrained personal preference. And then you need a custom strategy for that person.
