Does anyone have any insight about mobile app behaviour as far as GPS tracking works?
For the last day and change I’ve been using three walking tracker apps simultaneously to see which gives me the best info and UI when I’m out walking the dog.
But here’s the issue I’m trying to wrap my head around: Why are each of the three giving me different results?
This morning, all going and stopped at the same time, one says I walked 1.47 km, another says 1.7, and the third says 1.93.
So at the extremes you have a difference of almost half a km of distance walked, but all pulling the same data from the same GPS hardware on the same phone.
How/why is it different at all, let alone THAT different? The distance travelled is the distance travelled. There’s no interpretation to be made, it’s a very specific, hard number. So how are different apps giving me pretty drastically different results (for these purposes)? And which do I believe?
(For the record, I used Apple Maps to plot out the route I used and it gave me a different answer yet again. I could try Google Maps, which is probably more granular, but assuming that gives me a fifth result, is that the best metric to compare everything else to? It’s maddening.)
