I believe the choice is presented this way purposefully, especially when explaining the terms Democrat and Repubublican. American politics starts to makes more sense when you learn that modern Democrats were called Federalists and modern Republicans were formerly the Democratic Republicans.
Federalist = big government more taxes more social programs, natianal banks
Dem. Republican = small fed. government more emphasis on states rights and individual rights, anti national banks.
Using terms like liberal/conservitive can be confusing because they can be applied socialy, financially or religiously, and givin nobody will agree on everything so there is a spectrum.
I agree a revamp is needed, the average person couldn't tell you the difference between the partys, libertarians are the only ones with a name indicative of their beliefs.
