"Geese, Go Home!" Mykola Pymonenko, 1911.
Pymonenko (1862-1912) was a Ukrainian Realist painter, noted for his scenes of rural farm life, country folk, and the working class.
He was born in the village of Priorka, just outside Kyiv, and initially was followin gin his father's footsteps as a painter of religious icons. His work was spotted by a painting teacher who arranged for him to be educated at the Kyiv Art School, and later studied at the Imperial Academy in St. Petersburg, but ill health and money troubles forced his return to Kyiv.
He joined the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), an art movement that rebelled against formal academicism, but they turned on him when he seemed to sell out...his art appeared on a booze bottle, but it turns out it was used without his permission. He's now regarded as a Ukrainian national treasure.
Here we have a girl herding her geese through a huge puddle...obviously, it's been raining, like it has where I am. And GEESE! We have a ton of Canada geese that hang out around my office building, and zowie, do they poop a lot!
