When I taught labs for Fish Biology, we’d have preserved museum specimens to start. Then we’d go into the field and catch live fish and put them in small aquaria and suddenly they had all these colors and patterns! Behaviors to watch! I created a web site with photos for all the field sites, but had to include photos of the live fish and its field marks next to the preserved fish with its identifying characters. Had to learn each fish twice!
