The buying of land by foreigners brings me to another point I'm very conflicted about : free-flow migration.
As a human being, I feel offended to be told I have to ask for permission (visa, passports, etc) to go somewhere else on this Green Earth. Passports are a relatively new creation (about a 100 years or so?).
However, I also understand that free-flow migration in the West would completely eliminate the (remnant of) social dynamic that most people in the West take for granted. I really don't know how to square that in my own mind.
Unless of course if I take the approach of the Saudia Arabian foreign minister I remember listening to in an interview : "Why would we have to be consistent?". I could square the problem by saying I can move around freely but others can't. However, that hurts my sensibilities as a functional human being! 😀
I love foreign languages, foods, cultures, etc. And I do like a variety of local social interactions. However, I also appreciate a fairly common, easy to navigate, predictable, local culture.
Really don't know how to square these two things...
