As much as my 8yo annoys me I am also sometimes impressed with how smart he can be. He will pretend not to know how to make a sandwich for himself, but yesterday he stayed home and amused himself by reading comic books in three languages.
OK Polish is what he has in school, and I try to prompt him towards reading German. But then he found a collection of old Garfield comic strips in English among the comic books I gave him, and he decided to read that one and was delighted at the jokes.
