Monero wasn't "cracked". Those criminals in Japan were caught because they were funneling funds into credit cards.
If you're connecting to someone elses node of course you have to connect using a VPN/Tor. Zcash doesn't change that. Zcash also doesn't hide transaction IP origin from other nodes on the network, but Monero does.
Nym does look promising, but it's fairly new
