I would argue ultimately they likely use more than the large ones if you consider economy of scale (eg if everyone ran them on their own PCs they would probably add up to a lot more versus the larger scale things producing results faster with the appropriate dedicated hardware.)

Sure you can rig up something that runs on a Raspberry Pi, but to produce the results you get on the big things would take an equivalently larger time.
