The way I took that scene was, yes there was room for both but the combined weight would have had the wood submerge just barely under the water surface. It would still float but float under the surface as opposed to float on the surface. There is a difference between being wet and consistently IN water.
Floating on the wood & being wet is better than being inside the actual cold ocean where you would lose body heat faster & both die from hypothermia.
Just my 2 cents on that scene.
