This is what went wrong: when someone told me how to write Odin's breed in Chinese, I misread it as 纽芬兰大 which would be phonetically niu-fen-lan-da and thought "ah, Newfoundland." But it actually said 纽芬兰犬， niu-fen-lan-quan, where the -d at the end of Newfoundland just vanishes: Newfoundland dog.
