The year of the GNU/Linux desktop was in 1995 or so, as you could finally use a recent computer in freedom again - too bad those Linux developers savagely ripped the freedom away in 1996 via the addition of the first proprietary program into Linux.
Linux really isn't relevant, as that isn't even fully source-available.
