I was fortunate today to attend a lecture by Dali L. Yang, a brilliant political scientist at U Chicago, on China's flawed response to the Covid outbreak in Wuhan. His research shows that local doctors and epidemiologists were almost immediately aware of the gravity of the situation. But China's authoritarian system prevented the rapid and accurate flow of information to national authorities.
Liberal democracy is not only morally superior; it's a better mechanism for handling crises.
