Is it important to have a likeable MC? Why?
Well, first, I think it depends on genre. Some are more character driven than others and having an unsympathetic MC probably wouldn't go over too well. Others I think you could get away with a more sympathetic world and have a pretty awful MC to follow. World as MC is not really something I think maybe people consider as an option.
Overall, I agree with a lot of others about there needing to be some kind of empathizing characteristic. Something that makes a reader go "you're an asshole, but you're my favorite asshole", basically. And as others have pointed out, that can come later in the story if you give the reader something up front to be curious/empathetic about.
